At Outthinker we are driven by solving problems that matter. We have conducted over 300 strategy sessions, helping teams within a broad range of firms, including Aetna, Cigna, Experian, HP, Johnson & Johnson, L’Oréal, Macmillan, Microsoft, Pfizer, Red Bull, TIAA-CREF, and VMWare, generate innovative ideas to unlock new growth opportunities.

Throughout these experiences, we have carefully studied what distinguishes successful strategy efforts (those that produce unique options that create competitive advantage and breakthrough performance) from those that lead to predictable “me too” strategies and average results. We have found that most strategy approaches inevitably follow one of two approaches: (1) option narrowing in which a team lays out their options and applies fact-based analysis to rule them out until the team reaches what appears to be the most logical one or (2) rules in which a team follows a set of rules or best practices drawn from aspirational competitors. But these approaches rarely lead to distinctive strategies. They produce imitable solutions and average results.
